XRP's Supply Picture Blurs as Ripple Unlocks and Binance Drains

Two supply-side developments landed on XRP this week, and neither one points cleanly in a single direction. Ripple released another 1 billion tokens from escrow, while Binance's XRP reserves dropped to their lowest level since December 2022. Read together, the two events describe a market where tokens are moving — but not necessarily being bought.

Ripple's Unlock Adds to an Existing Pile

Whale Alert flagged two releases of 500 million XRP each today, carrying out Ripple's monthly escrow schedule. On its own, the transaction proves neither a transfer to an exchange nor a sale. What matters is what Ripple does next: transfers, sales, or re-locks determine how much of the unlocked supply actually reaches the market.

This month carries an unusual wrinkle. The 1 billion XRP freed on October 1 reportedly sat untouched in wallets Ripple 10 and Ripple 11 through the end of October. Combined with that leftover, as much as 2 billion XRP could now be sitting in Ripple-controlled wallets. A larger wallet balance is not the same as a larger available supply, though, and no sale of that size has been confirmed.

History offers a rough yardstick. Over the twelve months through October, Ripple typically re-locked about 700 million XRP — 70% of each monthly release — leaving roughly 300 million available for operations, partners, and liquidity. That pattern is a reference point, not a commitment. One scenario floated a re-lock of 1.7 billion XRP; it has not been confirmed, and investors should treat the figure as neither a completed relief nor an announced corporate plan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

The backdrop is hardly supportive. XRP trades at $1.25 and has shed 16% over 30 days. That describes a weak environment; it does not establish that today's unlock moved the price.

Binance's Declining Reserves Cut Both Ways

Separately, Binance's XRP holdings reportedly fell to 2.47 billion tokens on Friday from 2.69 billion on Wednesday — the lowest since December 2022. Bybit and Bithumb also logged declining balances. For investors, the distinction between exchange outflows and fresh demand is the whole ballgame. The reserve data show only that fewer tokens sit on tracked exchange addresses. They explain neither the motive behind the transfers nor whether holders have increased their total positions.

The context complicates the read further. The backdrop is an alleged security incident at Binance — not at Ripple or on the XRP Ledger. Reuters reported Friday that Binance froze cryptocurrency holdings worth $3 billion during the investigation, with Circle and Tether reportedly freezing related assets as well. That is a separate matter from the technical security of the XRP Ledger, and the distinction matters: an exchange-level risk can weigh on XRP trading without demonstrating any weakness in the network itself.

XRP lost 7% on Thursday amid a broad crypto selloff, with media reports linking the decline to the Binance incident. Outflows during a possible security problem at a venue cannot simply be read as a vote of confidence in the token.

Fund Data Won't Settle the Argument

The latest ETF numbers don't close the gap either. Preliminary net inflows of $0.2 million were reported Friday for US spot XRP ETFs — but only three of five funds had reported, leaving the daily total incomplete. That caveat rules out treating the preliminary sum as a final tally for the session, and ETF inflows don't automatically confirm any particular explanation for the exchange outflows observed at the same time.

Thursday told a different story: the US spot ETFs reportedly pulled in $8.43 million, meaning fund demand existed during the selloff. Even so, the overall picture falls short of a broad accumulation thesis. Falling exchange reserves, a disruptive security event, and partially reported fund flows each need to be weighed on their own terms — and the next confirmed transfers from Ripple's wallets will say more about available supply than any single data point this week.
