The latest annual figures from Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD paint a picture of a company navigating significant headwinds. For the first time in four years, the automaker reported a decline in net profit—a drop that was notably steeper than market forecasts. A deeper examination of the financials indicates the situation would appear far more severe without substantial government backing.

Financial Performance Under Pressure

While BYD's total revenue expanded to 804 billion yuan (approximately 101 billion euros), the growth rate of 3.5% marks the company's slowest annual pace in six years. Net profit fell by 19%, a sharper contraction than the 12.1% decline anticipated by analysts. Profitability metrics also weakened, with the gross margin receding from 19.4% to 17.7%.

The primary culprit is the relentless price competition within China's overcrowded EV sector. This pressure intensified as sales of pure electric vehicles across the country plummeted by 35% during the first two months of 2026.

The Substantial Role of Government Subsidies

A critical, and growing, component of BYD's earnings is state support. In 2025, the company received 12.47 billion yuan (about 1.8 billion US dollars) in government operating subsidies, representing an increase of nearly 20% year-over-year. These funds accounted for 38.2% of the reported net profit of 32.6 billion yuan. Financial analysis suggests that without this state assistance, BYD's adjusted net profit would have collapsed by roughly 50%.

Strategic Pivot to International Markets

In response to domestic challenges, BYD is aggressively accelerating its export strategy. The company has raised its 2026 international sales target to 1.5 million vehicles, a 15% increase over the 1.3 million-unit goal set just in January. This push follows a strong export performance in 2025, where overseas deliveries surged by 140% to over 1.04 million vehicles.

The financial incentive for this global push is clear: BYD achieves a margin of approximately 20,000 yuan per vehicle in export markets, compared to only 5,000 yuan domestically. Foreign markets already contributed 38.65% to total revenue in 2025.

This export offensive is being supported by a rapid expansion of BYD's global footprint. The automaker has now entered the Bulgarian market, bringing its European presence to 35 countries. The company plans to establish close to 2,000 sales outlets across Europe by the end of 2026. Furthermore, new manufacturing plants in Hungary, Indonesia, and Brazil are scheduled to commence operations between March and December 2026, strengthening local supply chains.

Betting on Technology for Future Edge

Despite the profit squeeze, BYD increased its research and development expenditure by 17% to 63.4 billion yuan. A key innovation is the newly introduced "Blade Battery 2.0," which boasts the capability to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. The company is counting on such technological advancements to maintain its competitive lead.

Whether this R&D investment can help restore margins to previous levels will largely depend on the speed of the export drive's success and any potential easing of the intense price war in its home market.
