Rigetti Computing’s Flagship Quantum System Faces Revised Timeline
12.01.2026 - 07:03:04Rigetti Computing has announced a revised schedule for the commercial launch of its 108-qubit Cepheus-1-108Q system, now targeting the end of March 2026. The quantum computing specialist cited technical hurdles related to tunable couplers—critical components for computational accuracy—as the reason for the adjustment. The system was previously slated for availability by the end of 2025. This shift prompts market observers to assess its potential impact on the company's competitive position in the race for quantum advancement.
During a recent update, CEO Dr. Subodh Kulkarni acknowledged that despite "strong progress," additional time is required for testing and optimization. The company's target is a median two-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5%. Currently, the 108-qubit system achieves 99% fidelity, a respectable figure but one that falls short of the stated goal. For context, Rigetti's smaller 9-qubit systems have reached 99.7% fidelity, while its 36-qubit platform attains 99.6%.
The development of tunable couplers is central to Rigetti's modular chiplet architecture. The Cepheus system is designed to integrate twelve interconnected 9-qubit chiplets, a proprietary approach that distinguishes the company from its rivals. A successful implementation would result in one of the world's largest modular quantum computers. However, the inherent complexity of this design is now contributing to the timeline delay.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rigetti?
Board Member Transaction Coincides with Update
Coinciding with this roadmap update, a regulatory filing with the SEC dated January 2nd revealed that board member Dr. Alissa Fitzgerald disposed of 59,316 shares, valued at approximately $1.3 million. This transaction reduced her direct holdings by more than 63%. The proximity of this sale to the subsequently communicated delay is likely to generate discussion among investors.
Intensifying Competition in Quantum Computing
The schedule revision occurs amid a period of fierce competition within the quantum sector. While competitors like IBM and Google continue to scale their qubit counts, Rigetti is compelled to recalibrate its own timeline. The company's strategy hinges on its modular architecture as a key differentiator, making its technical execution paramount.
Investors will be watching for the company's fourth-quarter 2025 results, expected in early March 2026, when management is anticipated to provide a more detailed progress report on the Cepheus system. Meeting the new late-March 2026 deadline is now critical; failure to do so risks further erosion of investor confidence in Rigetti's ability to secure a breakthrough in the quantum space.
