AI-generated resumes are causing longer screening times for German HR departments, pushing interviews back to center of hiring. Demand for recruiters remains high with 1,500+ open positions.

The promise of artificial intelligence to streamline recruitment has backfired in an unexpected way: Rather than cutting screening time, AI-generated resumes and cover letters are bogging down human-resources departments across Germany.

A study published in March 2026 by staffing firm Robert Half found that 67% of HR leaders now view AI-crafted applications as a drag on the selection process. Fully 84% of those surveyed reported a measurable increase in the time required to review candidate materials. The core complaint: verifying a candidate’s actual abilities has become harder. Sixty-five percent of respondents said they struggle to validate the skills listed in AI-assisted submissions.

This trend is pushing personal interviews back to the center of hiring, according to recruiting expert Sven Hennige. Face-to-face meetings, he argues, have regained importance as a way to confirm that applicants truly possess the competencies they claim.

Yet the demand for HR professionals remains intense. In early June 2026, job portals such as stellenanzeigen.de listed more than 1,500 open recruiter positions nationwide. The average salary for those roles is roughly €45,000 per year.

Regional hot spots reveal where the need is greatest. Ostwestfalen-Lippe, particularly around Bielefeld, counted 46 vacancies. Employers there include NTT DATA and the Sarepta/Nazareth foundations. Further west, the Rhineland and the Düsseldorf commuter belt reported about 22 openings, among them leadership roles at SPIE and the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Nordrhein.

The public sector is also competing for talent. The Reinickendorf district office in Berlin posted a permanent position in business development with an application deadline of July 3, 2026. In Switzerland, demand is concentrated at companies such as OBI Schweiz in Schaffhausen and the city administration of Zürich.

Alongside market-wide hiring, strategic personnel moves are reshaping the consulting industry. Executive-search firm Amrop appointed Fredy Hausammann as its new chairman in late May 2026, while Mansour Abdulghaffar and Elin Wrammerfors joined the global board. At Willis Towers Watson, Hanne Borst will take over as head of Retirement for Germany starting in October. Digital Leaders Advisory (dla) added Carolyn Schlak as a partner earlier this year. In Frankfurt, InterSearch Executive Consultants is expanding its finance and industrial practice with two seasoned partners.

Why is the talent hunt so acute? Professor Thomas Deelmann illustrated the math using a big consultancy with 2,000 employees. With an annual turnover rate of 15% and market growth of 10%, that firm would need roughly 500 new hires each year just to stay even.

To feed the pipeline, companies are investing heavily in training. Bain & Company has run its own Sustainability Academy for ESG programs across the DACH region since 2022. In Cologne, GreenPocket — part of the Hausheld group since 2025 — is hiring for employer-branding and applicant-management roles as its HR structure continues to grow.
