Allianz Delivers Record Payout and €2 Trillion Asset Milestone as Its Own Risk Study Flags War Danger

Allianz posts record Q1 operating profit of €4.5B, raises dividend to €17.10, and sees asset management AUM top €2 trillion, despite warning of armed conflict as top business risk.

The insurer is firing on all operational cylinders while simultaneously sounding alarms over a deteriorating global risk landscape. Allianz's latest in-house risk barometer shows that armed conflict has overtaken civil unrest as the top business threat, disrupting supply chains and inflating tariff and energy costs. Yet those warnings have done little to cool the momentum at the Munich-based group, which just posted a record first quarter and rewarded shareholders with a €17.10 dividend.

The strongest structural shift lies in asset management. Third-party assets under management have surged past €2 trillion, transforming the division into a credible counterweight to traditional insurance operations. Scale effects in this business are pronounced—the larger the platform, the more efficiently costs can be spread across mandates. That diversification gives Allianz a broader earnings base less dependent on premium volumes, claims ratios and investment returns from the insurance side.

Capital strength backs the distribution strategy. The Solvency II ratio ended the first quarter at a thick 221%, leaving substantial headroom above regulatory thresholds. The €17.10 per share dividend was paid out on May 12, and a share buyback programme with a maximum volume of €2.5 billion has been running since March. In the first quarter alone, the group repurchased shares worth €300 million. These moves are designed to deploy excess capital efficiently and keep return on equity attractive in a mature market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

The operational engine is humming. Allianz reported an operating profit of €4.5 billion for the first three months of the year, up nearly 7% compared with the prior-year period. Adjusted for one-off effects in India, core net profit also rose by a solid 7%. The strong start sets the tone for the full year, with management targeting an operating result of around €17.4 billion for 2026.

The stock is reflecting that resilience. Shares traded near €379–€380.80 this week, sitting 3.16% above their 200-day moving average. The relative strength index stands at 69.0, indicating a healthy but not overheated trend. On a one-year view, the equity has gained just over 9%. RBC Capital Markets recently reaffirmed a neutral rating, citing the defensive qualities of the stock in the current market environment.

Consolidation across European insurance is reshaping the competitive field. Tie-ups such as Barmenia with Gothaer and Helvetia with Baloise show that scale and distribution clout are becoming ever more important. For Allianz, its size is an advantage in technology, sales and administration, but smaller rivals can close gaps quickly through mergers and pool regional strengths.

The key variables for the months ahead are natural catastrophes and the trajectory of capital markets. Those will determine whether the group can beat its strategic targets ahead of schedule. But the central test remains growth in the third-party asset business—if that gathers pace, the current valuation will rest on firmer ground.
