Apprentices in Austria will see their tax-free income threshold climb to €12,348 in 2026, a €252 increase from the previous year, as part of a broader package of financial supports for vocational trainees. The adjustment to the basic allowance applies to all apprentices whose training remuneration counts as taxable wages under the country’s electronic wage tax deduction system (ELStAM).
Alongside the tax relief, the low-earner threshold remains at €325 per month. In-kind benefits can be offset against up to 75 percent of gross pay. For those working part-time, special rules allow proportional reductions in pay as long as the compensation remains “appropriate.”
Housing and Parental Support for Trainees
State-funded vocational training assistance, or Berufsausbildungsbeihilfe, is granted on a needs basis. Apprentices who maintain their own household can receive up to €822 per month; those living with their parents are eligible for €276. These rates were already increased in August 2024. Under certain conditions, trainees may also qualify for additional basic income support (Bürgergeld).
Apprentices who become parents during their training can claim parental allowance. If they continue a part-time program with unchanged pay, the minimum benefit is €300. While the training assistance remains tax-free, parental allowance is subject to the progression proviso (Progressionsvorbehalt), meaning it can raise the marginal tax rate on other income.

In the Waidhofen district, a total of €17,500 was disbursed to members in 2026, earmarked to ease the cost of professional development courses. A spokesperson for the district office stressed the programme’s importance for regional skills upgrading.
