D-Wave Quantum stock surges 35% on federal funding but faces dilution fears as revenue plunges 81% and CFO sells millions in shares ahead of first Investor Day.

D-Wave Quantum heads into its first-ever Investor Day on June 1 carrying a rare combination of tailwinds and red flags. The quantum computing company has seen its stock surge 35% in the past week, fuelled by a fresh injection of federal cash, but the rally is shadowed by a multimillion-dollar share sale from its finance chief and a stark disconnect between record forward indicators and collapsing revenue.

The stock closed at €25.80 in Frankfurt on Friday, up 1.98% on the day and 64.91% over the past month. The annualised 30-day volatility stands at 134%, underscoring how sensitive the shares are to every new data point. In U.S. trading, the price ended the week 4.47% below the monthly high of $31.55 reached on May 22, hovering near key technical levels. The first support sits at $28.32, while resistance lies at $31.06, $31.98 and $33.80.

A Paradox of Record Orders and Revenue Contraction

D-Wave’s latest quarterly numbers paint a conflicting picture. Bookings exploded by nearly 2,000% to $33.4 million, and remaining performance obligations soared 563% to $42.4 million. Yet revenue collapsed 81% to just $2.9 million, a drop the company attributes to the non-recurrence of a large hardware deal from the prior year. Operating costs more than doubled to $56.5 million.

The divergence between booming demand signals and weak top-line performance will be a central topic at the Investor Day, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m. ET at the New York Stock Exchange under the banner “The D-Wave Difference.” Management is expected to lay out the technology roadmap, progress on error-corrected gate-model systems, the integration of the recently acquired Quantum Circuits business, and the role of quantum computing in energy-efficient artificial intelligence. The market will be watching closely to see whether the forward momentum can translate into revenue growth.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Government Money Flows In — at a Price

The recent share price surge was triggered by twin government developments. D-Wave secured continued funding for the second year of its SQFab project through the NORDTECH defence hub, with four programs collectively receiving more than $25 million. The money is earmarked for improving superconducting qubit materials using scalable manufacturing methods, giving the investment story a concrete hardware anchor.

On the same day, the White House announced $2.013 billion in quantum investments spread across nine companies. TD Cowen singled out D-Wave, Rigetti Computing and GlobalFoundries as the three biggest beneficiaries. In a separate deal, D-Wave holds a $100 million funding agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce that will see the government receive new shares in exchange for the grant — a structure that adds to dilution concerns.

The company’s cash position remains strong at $588.4 million, but the aggressive spending pace and the equity-linked government grant have left investors wary of future dilution.

CFO and Legal Officer Cash Out

On May 22, Chief Financial Officer John Markovich sold 328,752 shares at a weighted average price of $27.7037, netting approximately $9.1 million. The trades were executed over a range of $27.00 to $28.61. After the sale, Markovich directly holds 1,442,820 shares, representing a reduction of roughly 19% of his position.

Chief Legal Officer Diane Nguyen also sold 40,000 shares at $25.01, though her transaction was executed under a pre-arranged 10b5-1 trading plan designed to shield insiders from accusations of trading on non-public information. The absence of any stated reason for Markovich’s sale does not make it a business forecast, but the timing — right before the Investor Day and on the heels of a sharp rally — is notable.

D-Wave Quantum at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

What the Analysts Are Saying

Despite the insider selling, analyst sentiment remains broadly positive. A survey of 13 analysts gives the stock a “Strong Buy” consensus with an average price target of $35.17, according to one source, while a separate consensus from MarketBeat rates it as “Moderate Buy” with a target of $34.67. Short interest stands at 14.5% of the float but has declined 11.5% recently, indicating that some bears are throwing in the towel.

The technical picture is mixed: the overall rating is 40% buy, but key moving averages are flashing buy signals. The stock currently trades around 52% above its 50-day moving average.

The Investor Day on Sunday will test whether D-Wave’s management can back the existing euphoria with concrete milestones. If the message focuses on real customer adoption, capital discipline and a clear path from record bookings to recurring revenue, the stock could break above the initial resistance at $31.06. But if the gap between the order book and the income statement remains the dominant theme, the $28.32 support level will come into sharp focus.
