A family of four escaped a blazing apartment in Cologne's Severinsviertel on 2 June only after firefighters were forced to abandon any attempt to use a ladder. When crews arrived at the top-floor flat on Severinstraße, the apartment was already fully engulfed in flames.

The family had retreated onto a rear balcony, but dense smoke trapped them there. Firefighters quickly ruled out a turntable ladder rescue because the narrow street and building design did not allow the required 22-metre turning circle. "We could not reach the building from the outside," said fire department spokesperson Ulrich Laschet. Crews laid down a jump cushion as a safety measure. The actual rescue had to be conducted through the smoke-filled stairwell, with firefighters guiding the parents and their two children out using escape hoods.

When traditional rescue methods are blocked by building constraints, prevention becomes even more critical. UK employers have a legal duty to carry out fire risk assessments and maintain up-to-date evacuation plans. The blaze was extinguished after roughly one hour. The apartment has been declared uninhabitable.

Large-Scale Drill at Stadium Tests Chemical Emergency Response

Just one day later, on 3 June, around 800 emergency personnel from police, fire, THW technical relief agency and medical services gathered at the Rheinenergie-Stadion for a disaster preparedness exercise. They were joined by 400 volunteer role-players.

The scenario simulated a serious accident at a pesticide manufacturer, with a toxic gas cloud drifting over the stadium. The focus was on decontaminating people, vehicles and equipment. At the centre was the new EU-funded special unit "rescEU-CBRN-DECON", involving THW, federal police and the Federal Office for Civil Protection (BBK). The unit is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2026. Exercise director Nils Jakubeit from THW described the drill as a success.

Other Incidents: Burnt Food and Pyrotechnic Attacks

In Königswinter-Oberpleis on 3 June, a large-scale operation unfolded at a supported-living facility. Burnt food on a stove produced heavy smoke. Sixty responders evacuated 13 residents. One elderly woman was taken to hospital with an internal medical emergency; the remaining residents were temporarily housed at a nearby retirement home.

Meanwhile, Cologne authorities are investigating two pyrotechnic-related incidents. In the early hours of 4 June, unknown perpetrators attacked an ice-cream parlour in Cologne-Raderberg. They ignited a pyrotechnic device, shattering the front door's glazing. No fire broke out. Criminal police have opened an investigation.

Separately, police provided an update on a July 2025 arson attack targeting a well-known cartoon character. Despite releasing wanted posters, investigators have not developed a solid lead. The case may be provisionally closed.
