German Union Warns Against Office Fans as Back Absences Hit Record Levels

As summer temperatures climb, Germany’s IG Metall union issued a stark warning on June 19: ventilators and desk fans do more harm than good in hot offices. The devices stir up dust and pollen, spread aerosols, and pose a direct risk to allergy sufferers while increasing the chance of respiratory infections. The union’s advice: ventilate at night, close blinds during the day, and switch off unnecessary electrical equipment.
That warning lands against a worsening backdrop for workplace health. Back pain now accounts for more sick leave than any other cause in Germany. A new report from PC-WELT pegs the 2024 rate at 142 sick days per 100 insured individuals—a 20 percent jump from 2019. Ergonomics are the obvious countermeasure, specialists say. Monitors should sit at eye level, knees and elbows must form 90-degree angles, and the 20-20-20 rule can relieve eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at something six meters away for 20 seconds.

Companies are getting creative with prevention. The tech firm secova embeds weekly yoga sessions and movement breaks into meetings. On the institutional side, the Fonds Gesundes Österreich (FGÖ) released a best-practice brochure in May 2026. By the end of 2025, 4,758 firms had signed the BGF-Charta, and over 2,700 carried a quality seal. Meanwhile, the DAK-Gesundheit and MCC are accepting applications through July 4 for the 11th German BGM-Förderpreis, which awards €60,000 in in-kind services for innovative digital health solutions.
Hardware makers are cashing in on the trend. A June 18 test rated the Herman Miller Aeron, Libernovo Omni, and Flexispot C7 Morpher as top ergonomic office chairs—key criteria being adjustable lumbar support, 4D armrests, and sync tilt mechanism. FlexiSpot is offering discounts on its ValtreX desk series and ergonomic chairs from June 23 to 26. Renpho plans price cuts on smart wellness devices like eye massagers and light therapy masks. For movement at the desk, Sportstech’s new WoodPad Pro is a foldable walking pad made of real wood, pitched squarely at home-office workers who take calls while strolling.
In a separate development, Microsoft is rolling out a “Workplace Check-in” feature for Teams in June 2026. It uses Wi-Fi to detect whether employees are inside company buildings. Microsoft stressed it is not precise location tracking. In Germany, the function requires an active opt-in via company agreements and must be manually enabled.
Legal obligations are tightening too. The TÜV AUSTRIA reminds firms that occupational medical care is mandatory from the very first employee—including home-office staff. The goal is to cut accident and health risks before they happen.
