German Workers Locked in Chairs for 67 Hours Weekly as Experts Push 66-Day Back-Pain Fix

Germans now spend an average of more than 67 hours per week online, according to the Postbank Digital Study 2026 — and while that figure has dropped slightly from previous years, it still means vast stretches of sedentary time. The result, say health specialists, is a nation plagued by tension in the hips and lower back, a problem that simple stretching cannot solve.
The German Campaign for Healthy Backs (AGR) warns that muscles, not flexibility, are often the root cause. Weak gluteal muscles in particular fail to stabilise the hips, forcing the lumbar spine to take the load. Experts now recommend a structured approach that combines strengthening, mobility work and relaxation.
Why stretching alone is not enough
Many people assume that reaching for the toes will end their pain. Physiotherapists and orthopaedic specialists disagree. They point to a lack of core and hip stability as the true culprit. The deep hip-flexor complex, for example, can be trained using a diagonal stretch — either with a cable pulley or a resistance band — to create the necessary tension while preventing the lower back from taking over.
Minibands have become a key tool in this effort. They allow targeted activation of the side gluteal muscles, which are critical for a healthy hip joint and a relieved spine.
Stress, yoga and the 66-day rule
Stress compounds the problem. The AGR recommends gentle yoga styles — Hatha, Yin or Restorative yoga — that combine controlled movement with relaxation. Poses such as the downward-facing dog, child’s pose and sphinx pose are among the most effective. Certified courses are often subsidised by health insurers, though a consultation with a doctor is advised if acute pain is present.
The crucial factor for lasting change, however, is regularity. One concept now gaining traction is built around 66 days of consistent training — the period studies indicate is needed to cement new habits. The routine goes beyond exercise: it also incorporates adequate hydration and time for hobbies.
For daily life, short formats are available: 20-minute workouts that include kicks in a plank position or hip flexor exercises. The goal is to train the body as a single unit.
In-person options remain in Brandenburg
While digital offers proliferate, local courses still play a role. In the state of Brandenburg, new Pilates and gymnastics classes begin next week. They focus on strengthening the deep core muscles and fascia training. Advance registration is required.
