Graphite One reports widened Q1 loss and stock slump, yet rare earth discovery at Alaska deposit and $2.07B EXIM bank interest signal strong long-term potential.

Graphite One is juggling a widening quarterly loss and a beaten-down stock price with what could prove to be a transformative pair of catalysts — the discovery of significant rare earth elements at its Alaskan graphite deposit and a $2.07 billion financing interest from the U.S. Export-Import Bank. The contrast between near-term financial strain and long-term strategic positioning is sharp.

The company reported a net loss of $3.03 million for the first quarter of 2026, nearly double the $1.56 million loss a year earlier. Marketing campaigns, project development costs and higher management compensation drove the increase. Yet the balance sheet has strengthened considerably: cash stood at $18.56 million at the end of March, up from just $8.37 million at the end of 2025, after a February capital raise and warrant exercises boosted the treasury. Net working capital reached $28.52 million. Despite that improvement, management warns that additional financing is needed within the next twelve months to cover administrative expenses, secure mine permitting, and advance the planned Ohio processing plant.

The stock closed the week at €0.71, roughly 3% lower on Friday and more than 53% below its 52-week high of €1.52. The shares now trade beneath both the 50-day moving average of €0.74 and the 200-day average of €0.83. The relative strength index sits at 61.8, a neutral reading that suggests markets are waiting for concrete developments rather than pricing in any of the potential upside.

Those developments may already be materialising beneath the surface. Independent assays on 21 core samples from Graphite Creek — taken from the same area outlined in the February 2025 feasibility study — have confirmed elevated concentrations of heavy rare earths. The five most critical magnet elements were identified: neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium and samarium. Samarium is used in samarium-cobalt permanent magnets, while scandium and elevated yttrium values also appeared. The company plans to begin extraction testing this year in partnership with a U.S. national laboratory, raising the possibility that rare earths could be co-produced alongside graphite during the early years of operation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Graphite One?

The timing of the discovery aligns with mounting geopolitical tensions. China imposed export controls on magnet rare earth elements in February 2024 and tightened graphite export restrictions later that year. UBS Evidence Labs has highlighted that U.S. reliance on China for both graphite and rare earths is particularly acute. A single domestic deposit capable of supplying both minerals carries strategic weight far beyond the commodity markets.

On the financing side, the Export-Import Bank has expanded its non-binding letters of interest to a combined $2.07 billion — $670 million earmarked for the Graphite Creek mine in Alaska and $1.4 billion for the planned Ohio anode facility, with a 15-year term. That could cover roughly 70% of the total capital requirement. Graphite One expects to submit formal applications later this year and is negotiating the remaining 30% with commercial banks. The permitting process, meanwhile, is running under the federal FAST-41 programme, with a target decision date of September 29, 2026.

On the ground in Ohio, the company secured a site in Conneaut on May 19, located on the shores of Lake Erie with rail access, a deepwater harbour and an existing electrical substation. FirstEnergy has confirmed sufficient power supply for the plant. The first phase targets 10,000 tonnes of synthetic graphite anode material per year, with production slated for late 2027. Expansion to 25,000 tonnes is planned by mid-2028, and the long-term goal is 100,000 tonnes annually.

Graphite One at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The annual meeting is scheduled for June 26, 2026, where shareholders will vote on the stock option plan. Between now and September, the two clearest share price catalysts remain the FAST-41 permitting decision and the conclusion of binding offtake agreements. Whether Graphite One can secure the necessary funding without major dilution, and keep its Alaska timeline on track, should become clear by the end of the year.
