Institutional Buyers Pile Into D-Wave as $2 Billion US Program and Record $33.4M Bookings Override Weak Quarter
29.05.2026 - 20:04:28 | boerse-global.deA potent combination of federal backing and surging order flow is reshaping the investment case for D-Wave Quantum, even as near-term revenue numbers fell short of expectations. The stock has surged nearly 57% over the past month, with institutional ownership now standing at 42.47% of outstanding shares.
Washington’s Quantum Bet
The catalyst changing the narrative is a newly unveiled US government programme committing $2 billion to build domestic quantum infrastructure. Under that umbrella, as much as $100 million may be directed as equity stakes in multiple quantum startups. D-Wave, as the only publicly listed pure-play quantum company, is seen as a prime beneficiary.
The five-day rally triggered by the announcement added roughly 35% to the company’s market value. Trading volumes reflected the excitement: on the busiest day, 54.2 million shares changed hands — 69% above the typical daily average of 32 million. The euro-listed stock closed at €24.55, dipping 2.96% on the day, but the short-term retreat does little to dim the larger picture.
A Wave of Institutional Accumulation
Behind the price action lies a distinct pattern of professional buying. Regulatory filings reveal that Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities built a new position in the fourth quarter, acquiring 65,000 shares worth approximately $1.7 million — making D-Wave its fifth-largest single holding. Vanguard increased its stake by 41.2% to 38.45 million shares, while HighTower Advisors raised its position 11.4% to 171,079 shares. Foundations Investment Advisors added 60,050 shares, a 14.6% increase.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?
Among new entrants, Seven Grand Managers disclosed a 50,000-share position valued at roughly $1.3 million, and Western Wealth Management also entered during the first quarter. Bank of America boosted its holdings by 10.5% to more than 3.8 million shares. These moves reflect confidence that D-Wave’s strategic position — spanning both annealing and gate-model quantum architectures — aligns with the direction of government funding.
Record Bookings Mask a Revenue Miss
The first quarter of fiscal 2026 delivered a mixed picture. Revenue came in at $2.86 million, well below the $4.19 million analysts had pencilled in. The net loss of $0.05 per share, however, beat consensus estimates by three cents.
Far more striking was the bookings figure: $33.4 million, representing a twenty-fold increase year-over-year. That record order intake stems partly from the company’s recent merger with Quantum Circuits LLC (QCi), which gave D-Wave the largest cash position in its history. The deal also provides infrastructure for the second funding round of the SQFab project, which targets scalable fabrication of superconducting qubits. That initiative, part of the NORDTECH programme under the Microelectronics Commons umbrella, draws from a cluster of four projects with more than $25 million in total backing.
Analyst Targets Hold Firm
Despite the revenue disappointment, the analyst community remains broadly constructive. Fourteen analysts rate the stock a buy, two a hold, and one a sell. The average price target sits at $34.67, with Needham and Cantor Fitzgerald both calling for $40. Rosenblatt Securities is the most bullish at $43, while Mizuho trimmed its target from $31 to $29 but kept an "Outperform" rating.
D-Wave Quantum at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Some valuation models see fair value around €40 per share — well above the current €24.55 and the 200-day moving average of €20.43 — implying significant upside if the growth trajectory holds.
A High-Volatility Play
The stock’s annualised volatility of 134% underscores the risk embedded in the quantum theme. The balance sheet offers some reassurance: the current ratio stands at 21.41, the quick ratio at 21.31, and debt-to-equity at just 0.03. But with expectations running high and the first quarter’s top line missing estimates, the next catalyst hinges on how quickly the federal programme translates into tangible contracts, investments, or partnerships. Until then, the rally has already priced in a great deal of optimism.
