A series of significant fires at industrial and logistics facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East this week has disrupted operations and prompted urgent safety reviews. The incidents — involving high-density storage materials, hazardous substances, and ageing infrastructure — highlight the critical importance of fire prevention and emergency preparedness for UK employers managing warehouses, recycling yards, and fuel storage sites.

West Virginia Warehouse Fire Triggers State of Emergency

A massive blaze at a Peoples Cartage warehouse in Parkersburg, West Virginia, at the start of the week prompted Governor Morrisey to declare a state of emergency. The fire involved high carbon polymer and rubber polymer materials. Firefighters managed to isolate lithium batteries stored on-site to prevent further escalation, though the facility's sprinkler system was reported to be non-operational at the time.

By July 7, officials indicated the fire was between 95% and 100% contained, describing it as a multi-day event. A shelter-in-place order remained in effect for a 0.5-mile radius around a monitoring station north of the plant due to air quality concerns. Although initial screenings detected no hazardous materials, the Environmental Protection Agency and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection continue to monitor air quality and potential runoff into the Little Kanawha River.

Nearby businesses reported operational impacts from smoke and road closures. The West Virginia Rivers Coalition encouraged residents to document any ash or debris found in the aftermath. No injuries were reported.

British Authorities Tackle Two Major Industrial Incidents

In the UK, emergency crews responded to two significant industrial fires on July 6. In Wolverhampton, a fire at the Jones Skips recycling yard involved approximately 1,000 tonnes of recycling materials. Eight fire engines were deployed, and residents were advised to keep windows closed as a precaution against smoke. Fire crews expected to remain at the site through July 8 to ensure it was fully secured.

Separately, a major incident was briefly declared at an Impala Terminals facility in Milford Haven after a fire broke out in a decommissioned oil tank containing residual crude oil. The site also held roughly 60 gas cylinders containing propane and oxygen. One person received treatment for a minor injury at the scene. The major incident status was rescinded once the immediate risk to the public was mitigated.

Industrial Casualties and Cleanup Disputes

International safety concerns were further highlighted by a fire in the Aqaba industrial complex in Jordan on July 7. Two warehouses, each measuring approximately 500 square metres and containing belts and cables, were affected. One individual was taken to Prince Hashim Military Hospital after suffering from shortness of breath, though officials confirmed the spread of the fire was successfully prevented.

Meanwhile, in California, recovery efforts following a previous warehouse fire in Boyle Heights have met with logistical delays. As of July 6, the facility operator, Lineage, faced a cleanup deadline of less than 40 days. The company has claimed that Altus Power, the owner of a rooftop solar array at the site, has caused delays in the demolition process. Local government officials expressed frustration over the lack of shared data regarding cleanup progress, emphasising the ongoing impact on the local community.

In other incidents reported on July 6, firefighters responded to a warehouse fire in Tracy, California, and a brief commercial structure fire at a hazardous materials facility in Doraville, Georgia. The Doraville fire was extinguished quickly with no injuries reported. Investigations into the causes of these various incidents remain ongoing.
