Metaplanet’s May 13 Earnings Report Arrives Amid a Regulatory Fog Over TOPIX Access

Japan’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder is heading into a pivotal earnings release with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over its index ambitions. Metaplanet will publish its first-quarter results on May 13, just days after the comment period closed on a proposed rule that could lock it out of the TOPIX.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange’s index arm, JPX Market Innovation & Research (JPXI), floated a consultation on April 3 that would exclude companies whose primary assets are crypto from the benchmark. The proposal lacks a specific threshold, a review timeline, or an exit mechanism — leaving Metaplanet in regulatory limbo. The company had targeted inclusion in the TOPIX by October 2026, a move that would unlock passive inflows from index-tracking funds.

The stakes are high. When MSCI considered similar restrictions for MicroStrategy in late 2025, the stock cratered from $365 to $147 — a roughly 60% plunge. MSCI ultimately scrapped the plan in January 2026. FTSE Russell has so far stayed quiet on any comparable rule changes.

Industry pushback has been swift. The Bitcoin For Corporations coalition has called on JPXI to withdraw the proposal entirely, citing the lack of clarity around review dates and exit conditions. Metaplanet’s strategy chief, Dylan LeClair, warned at the Bitcoin 2026 Conference that the rule, if applied during the October rebalancing, would also hit Remixpoint and ANAP Holdings.

The Numbers Behind the Narrative

Metaplanet currently holds 40,177 Bitcoin, with a book value of roughly $3.2 billion and an average acquisition cost of $97,593 per coin. Its “Bitcoin Income Generation” segment — primarily option writing against the stash — generated ¥2.97 billion in revenue during the first quarter. For the full year, management is targeting ¥16 billion in revenue, an 80% year-on-year jump.

But the rapid accumulation has come at a cost. The Bitcoin yield, which measures per-share growth of the treasury, slipped to 2.8% in the first quarter. To fund the buying spree, Metaplanet has diluted existing shareholders heavily, issuing over 130 million new shares in the first few months of the year alone.

The stock trades at ¥364 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, a far cry from its 52-week high of ¥1,930.

Project Nova and the Long Game

CEO Simon Gerovich is pushing ahead with “Project Nova,” an initiative to build out operational business lines in Japan and invest in local Bitcoin-sector partners. The goal is to demonstrate that Metaplanet is more than a pure holding company — a narrative that could prove crucial if the TOPIX door stays shut.

The company’s long-term target remains unchanged: 210,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2027, representing roughly 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. Whether that ambition is funded by institutional index money or further shareholder dilution will hinge on the outcome of the JPXI review — and the May 13 earnings report will offer the first hard data point on whether the company’s finances can sustain the pace.
