The past week has been anything but quiet for Rocket Lab. Within the space of a few days, the company hosted the head of the U.S. Space Force, attracted personal stock purchases from President Donald Trump, and received a Street-high price target from New Street Research — all while its shares rocketed to a new all-time high before pulling back. The confluence of military, political, and analyst attention has turbocharged a stock that has already quintupled over the last twelve months.

General Chance Saltzman, chief of the U.S. Space Force, toured Rocket Lab’s facilities in a high-profile visit that underscores the Pentagon’s deepening interest in commercial space capabilities. CEO Peter Beck used the company’s latest earnings call to highlight Rocket Lab’s growing role in missile-warning programs, hypersonic testing, and the development of space-based interceptors — central components of the so-called Golden Dome system. Rocket Lab has been selected alongside Raytheon for early work on that project, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates could cost up to $1.2 trillion over two decades. The message was reinforced this week by disclosure that President Trump personally bought shares on January 21, sending the stock up roughly 8% on Thursday.

New Street Research, which this week launched a dedicated space-coverage vertical that includes SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile among others, initiated Rocket Lab with a Buy and a $150 target — the most bullish call on Wall Street. The wider consensus sits well below at around $105.

Record Backlog and a Profit Surprise

Behind the headlines, the fundamentals are strengthening. Rocket Lab guided second-quarter 2026 revenue between $225 million and $240 million, with gross margins of 33% to 35%. More striking: the company now expects adjusted EBITDA of $23 million, versus the roughly $15 million loss analysts had forecast. The order backlog has swelled to $2.2 billion, providing multi-year visibility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?

The Neutron rocket remains the marquee catalyst. Beck confirmed the heavy-lift vehicle is still on track for its first flight by the end of 2026, with five launch contracts already signed. Execution risks around Neutron’s debut are well telegraphed, but Rocket Lab’s nascent EBITDA positivity offers a buffer that was absent in earlier stages.

Robotics Acquisition Tightens the Supply Chain

The company is also pulling manufacturing in-house. Its pending acquisition of Motiv Space Systems for $40 million in cash plus up to $20 million in stock — expected to close during the current quarter — will add a dedicated robotics unit. Motiv, which supplied subsystems for NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover, specialises in costly space-hardware components such as solar-array drive assemblies. The newly branded Rocket Lab Robotics division is designed to shrink production lead times and improve margin control at a moment when scale is accelerating.

Valuation: Priced for Perfection

All this momentum comes with a price tag that makes even seasoned growth investors wince. Rocket Lab currently trades at roughly 111 times forward sales, a staggering premium not just to its own five-year average of about 15 times but to virtually every other publicly traded space company. After touching a record of $132.55, the stock slipped back about 5% to around $126 on profit-taking — though it still sits on a one-month gain of more than 70%.

Rocket Lab USA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The strategic rationale is clear: Rocket Lab remains the only credible Western rival to SpaceX in the commercial launch business, and its expanding footprint in defence, robotics, and satellite components gives it a rare diversification. But that valuation assumes flawless execution on Neutron’s timeline and a steady conversion of the $2.2 billion backlog into cash flows. Any hiccup in the launch schedule or a broader rotation out of high-multiple names could quickly test the thesis. For now, the company has the spotlight — and all three branches of the U.S. government appear to be watching.
