Siemens Straddles Margin Dip and Order Boom as Bernstein Bets on Physical AI

Siemens Q2: Record free cash flow and €124B backlog contrast with margin erosion. Analysts eye 'physical AI' as re-rating catalyst; Bernstein and JPMorgan raise targets.

The Munich-based technology group has offered shareholders a confusing picture in recent weeks: record cash generation and swelling order books on one side, shrinking industrial margins and an overbought stock on the other. Analysts are picking through the data to decide which narrative will prevail, with several major banks lifting their price targets amid a new wave of enthusiasm for Siemens' role in the artificial intelligence shift beyond data centres.

The second quarter threw up a stark contrast between top-line momentum and profitability. Group revenue slipped nominally to just under €19.8 billion, though currency-adjusted sales climbed six percent. The real headline was free cash flow, which surged 71 percent to roughly €1.7 billion. The order intake also accelerated into double-digit growth, pushing the company's total order backlog to €124 billion. Smart Infrastructure set a quarterly record for bookings, while the software division posted a clear revenue increase.

Yet the industrial margin eroded to 15.4 percent, down from 16.9 percent a year earlier, and diluted earnings per share fell to €2.58. Management held the full-year outlook steady, leaving the market waiting for more convincing operational proof before fully embracing the valuation.

Bernstein Research sees a catalyst that could transform this waiting game into a re-rating. The brokerage reiterated its "Outperform" rating with a €300 price target, zeroing in on what analyst Alasdair Leslie calls "physical AI." The first wave of artificial intelligence benefited chipmakers and data centre operators; the next phase, he argues, will shift into industrial production. Siemens, with its integrated portfolio of automation, software and infrastructure, is well placed to ride that wave. Bernstein points to a 20 percent valuation discount versus peers, driven by the complexity of Siemens’ portfolio and lingering software concerns. The planned spin-off of Healthineers in February 2027 could untangle that knot, while a potential re-rating as a leader in industrial AI adds another lever.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens?

On the upside, Bernstein sees Digital Industries delivering organic revenue growth of 11 percent per year through 2030, pushing operating profit more than 30 percent above current consensus. That, Leslie stresses, is the real point: not the AI story alone, but its tangible effect on sales and margins.

JPMorgan is even more bullish, lifting its target from €325 to €335 with an "Overweight" stance. The bank focuses on improving earnings momentum towards fiscal 2027, particularly in Digital Industries and Smart Infrastructure. Goldman Sachs, which rates the stock a "Buy" with a €290 target, expects Siemens to soon replace its expiring share buyback programme with a new one, providing additional shareholder returns. Barclays remains the outlier at €230 with an "Underweight" call.

The stock has reacted positively, trading at around €261 on Wednesday afternoon with a gain of nearly two percent, lifting its year-to-date advance to roughly eight percent. However, the relative strength index has hit 81.1, marking the shares as technically overbought. The current price sits just 3.1 percent below the year's high, leaving little room for disappointment when Siemens reports third-quarter numbers in August.

Siemens at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The case for Siemens now rests on whether the AI factory narrative can translate into better margins from Digital Industries. Until then, the market is weighing a strong cashflow surprise against a profit squeeze — and watching the RSI for signs of a breather.
