Stab Vests and Bodycams: German Rail Workers Get New Protections as Attacks Surge in Central Region

Physical assaults on regional train staff across Germany fell 7 percent nationwide in 2025, but the picture in the central zone — covering Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and northern Baden-Württemberg — tells a different story. There, incidents jumped 15 percent, prompting DB Regio to roll out new safety measures from July. Stab-resistant vests will become standard issue, and the fleet of bodycams has been expanded to 1,750 units. Analysis of roughly 500 deployments showed that when cameras were active, serious assaults occurred only in isolated cases. Plans for the autumn include audio recording and AI-supported real-time video analysis.
Yet personal protective equipment remains a weak link elsewhere. Observations from the industry show that hearing protection and safety glasses are among the three most commonly forgotten items when workers visit clients’ sites. The lapse underscores a broader challenge in sectors such as logistics and construction, where safety gear is only as effective as its consistent use.
The 9 June Forklift Safety Day served as a reminder of the need for technical and organisational safeguards in internal transport. Such awareness campaigns aim to reinforce preventive habits. In scaffolding, six typical risk factors were identified earlier this month: open trapdoors, inadequate side protection and loose components. These recurring defects continue to cause preventable accidents, making full and correct use of PPE critical.
Fire safety is also under the microscope. A tightened standard, GB15930?2024, has been in effect since 1 March 2026, raising requirements for fire dampers’ fire resistance and their integration into IoT monitoring systems. At the FeuerTrutz trade fair in Nuremberg at the end of June, exhibitors will showcase new solutions, including VdS-certified partition stations and mobile suppression units. Public awareness, however, lags: a spring 2024 study found one in five citizens unaware of the legal requirement for smoke detectors. German law mandates at least one detector per bedroom, children’s room and along escape routes.
With fire safety standards tightening and awareness gaps persisting, many businesses underestimate the real cost of non?compliance. A free Fire Safety Toolkit provides an all-in-one package: risk assessments, evacuation plans, and fire extinguisher training materials to help you meet your legal obligations and protect your premises. Meanwhile, the federal cabinet voted in late May 2026 to add Parkinson’s disease caused by pesticides to the official list of occupational illnesses. The Bundesrat still needs to approve the change. Data from 2024 illustrates the scale of such procedures: nationwide, 90,749 suspected cases were reported, and 26,821 were officially recognised. A pension entitlement kicks in when the loss of earning capacity reaches at least 20 percent.
From 1 January 2027, all companies must keep social-security-relevant wage records electronically. The transition period is still running.
