R.E.M. release Reveal (25th Anniversary Edition) on 20 November 2026, expanding the album with The Black Sessions Revealed, a previously unreleased 17-song performance. The release brings a Paris recording made for Radio France into a new anniversary package, alongside fresh liner notes and several physical formats.
R.E.M. expand Reveal with The Black Sessions Revealed
The official announcement for 20 November says the edition will expand Reveal with the complete live performance. The 17-song set was recorded in Paris for Radio France and will make previously unreleased material available as part of the anniversary release.
The package will combine the original album with the live recording, new liner notes by journalist Birgit Fuss and an expanded digital edition. The deluxe format details include two CDs and a Blu-ray in a 32-page hardcover book. The live set will also appear as a standalone 2-LP release.
R.E.M. tie an Athens identity to the anniversary edition
R.E.M. came together in Athens, Georgia, and built a catalogue associated with alternative rock, college rock and folk-rock textures. Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills remain central to the band’s musical identity, while the anniversary edition revisits one of its established studio periods.
The pairing links a catalogue album with a performance-led companion rather than presenting the two elements as unrelated archive items. For listeners in Germany, the release therefore brings the album and a separate live document into one clearly defined package.
The Paris performance gives the reissue its live centre
The Black Sessions Revealed features R.E.M. performing songs from Reveal alongside selections from the wider catalogue. The announced performance lineup includes Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills, with Scott McCaughey, Ken Stringfellow and Joey Waronker also taking part.
Among the songs named for the set are Imitation of Life, The Great Beyond, Losing My Religion and Man on the Moon. The programme places the album’s polished studio songs beside material that has remained familiar across R.E.M.’s catalogue.
