Castel Sant'Angelo hosts a Visconti exhibition from 17 October
Published on 10/18/2026 at 00:31 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSCastel Sant'Angelo in Rome opened Luchino Visconti and the Staging of History on 17 October 2026, placing the director's work inside the monument where he once filmed. The exhibition remains on view until 29 November 2026 and centres on Il Gattopardo, Visconti's adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel.
Visconti exhibition runs at Castel Sant'Angelo until 29 November
The exhibition is curated by Caterina d'Amico and Gian Luca Farinelli. Its material includes production photographs, posters, original costumes, scripts, memorabilia and design sketches that document how a major film was assembled.
Rather than presenting only the finished film, the display follows the contributions of screenwriters, set designers, production designers, costume specialists, historic couture houses and composers. The exhibition is promoted by Castel Sant'Angelo together with the Italian Chamber of Deputies Culture Commission, the National Film Archive of the Experimental Cinematography Centre, Cinecitta, Archivio Luce, the Bologna Cinematheque Foundation, Titanus and the Gramsci Foundation, in collaboration with the Rome Film Festival. ANSA reports the exhibition details.
Film history meets the monument beside the Tiber
The link between the director and the site predates the new exhibition. Castel Sant'Angelo was one of the locations for Senso, where a final shooting scene was filmed, according to the exhibition's curator. The monument had also been used for an earlier film project connected with Jean Renoir.
The building itself has changed function repeatedly. The Ministry of Culture describes it as an imperial mausoleum that later became a fortified residence, prison and museum. Its rooms therefore provide a setting in which the exhibition's account of filmmaking meets a place shaped by successive uses and layers of Roman history. The Ministry describes the monument's changing roles.
The choice of this venue also connects the exhibition's subject with a documented part of Visconti's filmography. Visitors encounter the working process behind Il Gattopardo in a building that already belongs to the director's screen history, rather than in a neutral gallery setting.
