- The National Park Service reopened routes near Bright Angel Canyon on 26 October 2026.
- Bright Angel Trail remains limited to hikers, while Black Bridge and Phantom Ranch remain closed.
- Grand Canyon National Park covers 1,218,375 acres and became a World Heritage Site in 1979.
- Grand Canyon Village lies on the South Rim at an elevation of 7,000 feet.
Grand Canyon reopened several inner-canyon trails on 26 October 2026 after flood repairs, giving hikers near Grand Canyon Village access to more routes below the South Rim. The National Park Service said the reopening covers parts of South Kaibab, River and Bright Angel trails, while other crossings and facilities remain closed.
Flood repairs reopen three Grand Canyon trail sections
The National Park Service announced the change in its 26 October 2026 release. The South Kaibab Trail is open below The Tipoff, and the entire River Trail linking South Kaibab with Bright Angel has reopened to hikers. A section of Bright Angel Trail between Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse and Havasupai Gardens is also open to hikers only.
The reopening follows damage from flooding in Bright Angel Canyon and around Phantom Ranch. Repair crews are still working along Bright Angel, so the park warns of intermittent closures, delays and changes at short notice. The National Park Service reopening notice says the newly accessible Bright Angel section remains closed to stock use while repairs continue.
How the reopening fits Grand Canyon geography
The trails descend from the South Rim into a landscape shaped by the Colorado River. Grand Canyon National Park records an average depth of 1 mile (1.6 km), an average South Rim elevation of 7,000 feet (2,100 m) and 278 river miles (447 km) of canyon length.
That scale explains why a partial trail reopening does not restore access across the whole inner canyon. The Black Bridge, Silver Bridge, Phantom Ranch and the entire North Kaibab Trail remain closed. The reopening therefore reconnects selected routes south of the Colorado River without reopening every destination reached from Grand Canyon Village.
The park became a World Heritage Site in 1979. Its exposed rock layers record geological processes extending across billions of years, while the canyon itself reflects erosion by the Colorado River. The UNESCO World Heritage listing records the park in Arizona and describes its geological and cultural significance.
Water remains off along the reopened routes
Trail access has returned before water services have been restored. The National Park Service says water remains unavailable at Mile-and-a-Half Resthouse, Three-Mile Resthouse and Havasupai Gardens for the remainder of winter. Hikers must carry their own water and suitable filtration or treatment equipment.
The current access picture is therefore mixed: more trail is available, but the reopened corridors still require preparation and attention to posted instructions. The Arizona Office of Tourism also reports that the Bright Angel route is open to River Resthouse, South Kaibab reaches the Black Bridge and the connecting River Trail is accessible.
