Historic Centre of Morelia (Centro HistĂłrico de Morelia) hosts the DĂa de Muertos programme in Morelia, Mexico, from 23 October to 2 November 2026. The Ayuntamiento de Morelia has announced more than 20 cultural activities, while streets, plazas, balconies and historic buildings receive seasonal installations.
DĂa de Muertos programme runs from 23 October
The programme combines public art, exhibitions, processions and performances across the historic centre. The municipal tourism secretary Thelma Aquique said the schedule includes the Catrinas and Catrines parade, immersive experiences, decorated spaces and activities linked to the Mexican tradition.
The visual programme began before the main period. The city plans 150 craft lamps decorated with cempasĂșchil flowers around Cerrada de San AgustĂn, where the installation remains until 3 November. More than 100 balconies are also scheduled to carry seasonal decoration. The municipal programme for DĂa de Muertos also includes five monumental catrinas on Andador Hidalgo until 3 November and eight large skulls on Calle Nigromante from 16 October.
Historic Centre of Morelia frames the installations
The decorations occupy a protected urban ensemble rather than a single venue. UNESCO describes Morelia as a sixteenth-century city whose streets retain their original layout, with 249 important monuments, including 21 churches and 20 civil buildings.
The pink stone architecture brings the programme into direct contact with the place's historic character. Baroque facades, arcades, towers and domes form the setting for the lamps, balconies and public installations, while the Cathedral, Santa Rosa, Las Monjas and other churches remain named parts of the ensemble. UNESCO added the Historic Centre of Morelia to the World Heritage List in 1991. UNESCO's description of the historic centre links its architecture to Spanish Renaissance planning and Mesoamerican experience.
Morelia's public spaces carry the 2026 programme
Several activities connect the seasonal programme with recognisable public places. JardĂn VillalongĂn is scheduled to host Guardianes del MictlĂĄn, an exhibition of five artistically altered dogs, from 21 October. An arch of souls is planned for CallejĂłn del Romance from 20 October, while the Plaza de Armas is the setting for the Universidad Montrer immersive experience Una Noche para la Memoria.
The programme continues after the opening weekend. A Purépecha procession is scheduled for 29 October, artistic presentations follow on 30 October, and the Catrinas and Catrines parade is due on 1 November, travelling along Avenida Francisco I. Madero towards the Cathedral. These dated activities place the visitor route among the centre's squares, streets and monuments rather than inside one attraction.
