- Department of Conservation plans the Tongariro Northern Circuit loop from 18 December 2026.
- Mangatepopo Track and Oturere Hut currently shape the route available in Taupo.
- The 2026/27 route is listed at 35.5 km one way by the Department of Conservation.
Tongariro National Park and the Tongariro Northern Circuit are scheduled for a loop reopening from 18 December 2026 in the Taupo region of New Zealand. The Department of Conservation plans to make the rebuilt Oturere Hut and campsite available from that date, while repairs continue on the fire-damaged Mangatepopo Track.
Tongariro Northern Circuit targets 18 December loop return
The reopening plan was announced by the Department of Conservation on 4 September 2026. The agency said Mangatepopo Track was on course for a mid-December reopening and that the Oturere Hut and campsite would open for bookings from 18 December 2026.
Mangatepopo Track links Whakapapa Village with Mangatepopo Hut. Once that connection is usable and the Oturere facilities are available, walkers can again plan the Northern Circuit as a loop rather than an end-to-end route. The Department of Conservation describes the walk as a route through volcanic landscapes that includes parts of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Its reopening announcement says affected bookings are to be addressed directly by the agency.
Fire repairs change the route through Tongariro
The change follows fires that damaged structures on Mangatepopo Track in late 2025. The current route information still says the Northern Circuit is not operating as a Great Walk while Oturere Hut is being replaced, so 18 December is a planned access point rather than a guarantee that every repair will be complete on schedule.
Until then, the Department of Conservation lists the route at 35.5 km one way, compared with 44.9 km for the former loop. The current route starts at Mangatepopo Carpark and ends at Whakapapa Village. The agency recommends beginning at Mangatepopo Carpark because the Whakapapa Village to Mangatepopo Hut section remains closed in the live track information. The Northern Circuit report records the relationship between the fire repairs, the hut project and the planned return of the loop.
The route passes through the volcanic terrain that gives the park its distinctive character. The circuit includes the Mangatepopo Valley, South Crater, Red Crater, Emerald Lakes, Oturere Valley and Tama Lakes. The landscape is not a uniform walking surface: the track includes exposed alpine ground, steep slopes and loose rock around the crater sections.
Visiting Tongariro National Park: what travellers from Western Europe should know
- The planned loop change takes effect from 18 December 2026, when the Oturere Hut and campsite are scheduled to open for bookings.
- Before that date, Mangatepopo Track remains closed in the current Department of Conservation information, and the Northern Circuit is not operating as a complete Great Walk loop.
- The current one-way route is listed as 35.5 km and starts at Mangatepopo Carpark, with Whakapapa Village as its finishing point.
- The terrain is open, exposed and uneven, with steep and slippery sections near the descent from Emerald Lakes into Oturere Valley.
- Bus and train services stop at National Park Village, which is listed as 15 km from Whakapapa Village.
