- The National Park Service scheduled the West, South and East entrances to close on 1 November 2026.
- Visitors can still use the year-round road between Gardiner and Cooke City, weather permitting.
- Snowmobile and snowcoach travel is scheduled to begin on 15 December 2026.
Yellowstone National Park will close most roads and three entrances for its winter road closures on 1 November 2026, with the park remaining accessible by car through its northern route, Yellowstone. The National Park Service announced the seasonal change on 21 October; the park is also known as Yellowstone National Park in official records.
Most Yellowstone roads close on 1 November
The West, South and East entrances are scheduled to close to regular vehicle traffic on 1 November 2026, together with nearly all roads inside the park. The change prepares the area for winter operations and the start of snowmobile and snowcoach travel on 15 December 2026.
The final day for driving most routes in 2026 is 31 October. The road from Tower Fall to Canyon Junction over Dunraven Pass is scheduled to remain open through 31 October, weather permitting. The National Park Service says conditions can bring temporary restrictions or earlier closures.
The announcement is a practical change for visitors arriving during the boundary between autumn and winter. A journey planned around a southern, western or eastern entrance will no longer provide the same road access after 1 November, while the northern corridor remains the principal car route.
The seasonal schedule is set out in the National Park Service closure notice, which names the date, entrances and roads affected.
Yellowstone access continues through the northern corridor
During winter, regular vehicles can use the road connecting the North Entrance near Gardiner, Montana, with the Northeast Entrance near Cooke City and Silver Gate, Montana. The route passes through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley, linking named places within the park while most other roads are closed to ordinary traffic.
This route is not a guarantee of uninterrupted travel. The National Park Service advises visitors to monitor changing weather, expect limited services and allow for temporary closures caused by dangerous driving conditions. Cold-weather equipment and a full fuel tank are also recommended in the official notice.
Yellowstone extends across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, and its five main entrances serve different approaches to the park. The winter access arrangement therefore changes the practical shape of a visit: the North and Northeast entrances continue to connect the park by road, while the West, South and East approaches become unavailable to regular vehicles from 1 November.
The road pattern also separates ordinary driving from the later oversnow season. Snowmobile and snowcoach travel is scheduled to start on 15 December 2026, marking a different form of access rather than a reopening of the closed roads to regular cars. Current conditions remain subject to weather and operational changes.
The regional report on winter access confirms that the northern entrances are the car-access route after the seasonal closures.
